Peeling

There are as many types of chemical peelings as there are types of skin. At the Ruiz Castilla Institute in the Maresme and Barcelona, we offer peeling treatments adapted to your skin type.

Peeling treatments

Peeling, or chemical exfoliation, consists in the application of a chemical substance that regenerates the tissue and rejuvenates the skin. It increases the production of collagen and elastin, which are vital for keeping the skin soft and firm.

Where does the peeling work, and what types of peeling are there?

Many different types of peeling can be used, depending on the desired effect and the product used. The indications of the various chemical products depend on the skin’s phototype, the patient’s age, and the effect that we want to obtain. The older the skin, and the higher the presence of wrinkles, the deeper the peeling needs to be to obtain satisfactory results. Interestingly, with the repeated application of several surface peels we can obtain the same results as with a deep peel. We can also obtain different effects (rejuvenation, luminosity, lift, wrinkle removal, colour homogenization) using different combinations of substances. Like any aesthetic treatment, in each case we analyse the formula that’s best for you.

What are its main indications?

The possible indications of peeling are:

  • Facial wrinkles due to aging
  • Facial photo-aging
  • Post-acne scars
  • Dark patches (melasma)
  • Skin spots or hyperpigmentation
  • Keratosis and actinic cheilitis (lip inflammation)
  • Seborrheic keratosis
  • Xanthelasmas
  • Warts
  • It could have some effect in those patients with rosacea who do not respond to antibiotics.
  • Alterations caused by radiation

Post-peeling care

After each peeling session, and when the treatment is finished, the skin will be more sensitive to sunlight – so it is vitally important to apply maximum protection every day.

Frequency of treatment

The number of sessions needed depends on the aim of the treatment. It can range from one session (the flash point effect) to 3-10 sessions for intensive treatments of a specific problem. These sessions will be spread out over a period of between two and four weeks. Some types of peeling cannot be performed during periods of intense sunlight.

What will I achieve with a peel?

The main reason for peeling is to improve the skin, especially the face, so to reduce the signs of aging, and to remove spots, scars, acne, and so on.
